 Cottolenghine Sisters

Moved by the poverty of this area and the miserable sanitary conditions of the people, the Cottolengo Sisters, in 1977, started a small Dispensary for health care and organized Rural programs for the hygiene training of the person and the environment.

Gatunga Mission

The Territory of the Tharaka District is a lowland of about 1,561 sq km (600 m asl) with typical characteristics of the savannah, rich in low and thorny vegetation with the soil flooded with lava stone. It is one of the poorest districts in the country as it is still rather difficult to reach due to the lack of easily accessible roads. Villagers generally live in conditions of acute poverty; there are few areas suitable for agriculture; most of the territory is suitable only for grazing for goats.

Moved by the poverty of this area and the miserable sanitary conditions of the people, the Cottolengo Sisters, in 1977, started a small Dispensary for health care and organized Rural programs for the hygiene training of the person and the environment.

Our Services

From the very beginning of the presence in Gatunga, the HC health team also carries out the valuable service of the “mobile clinic” (or satellite clinic) in the most remote and disadvantaged areas of the district, also ensuring that population:

Vaccination service

Volunteering

The structure is open to welcome the voluntary service; is required:

Openness of heart to welcome and serve “our brother in Christ”

The poor are Jesus

It is towards everyone in need; children, youth, sick, disabled, immigrant, person who suffer the rejection from the family and society, “the one who nobody cares for” and we do it in; Schools, rehabilitation homes, hospitals, centre.

“The poor are Jesus”, said Cottolengo and we feel proud of being called to serve them because we serve Jesus.
